The Porte has notified the Powers that the Dardanelles are closed at night-time. The carpenters of Toronto, under threat of a strike, were granted a considerable increase in wages. Five vessels are ice-bound on Lake Michigan. There are many passengers aboard. They are in no danger yet. Advices have been received that the Javan Government has decided to banish 100 ringleaders of recent Chinese disturbances in Java. British Treasury returns indicate that a surplus of revenue over expenditure, for the current financial year, is assured. The gold yield of the State of Victoria hut year was 542,047 ounces gross, a decrease of ounces compared with the yield of the preceding year. The Chapman-Alexander mission party arrived at Fremantle yesterday by the Otranto. It will open its campaign in | Christchureh in April.
