ROTHSCHILDS ASSAILANT.
JEW FROM AUSTRALIA.
DETECTIVE BADLY WOUNDED.
(Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, March 5. Mr. Leopold de Rothschild's assailant was a Jew named William Tebbitt. The escape was a marvellous one, two of the shots being fired point blank at his car. Detective Berg grappled with the assailgait, who fired two more shots, shooting Berg in the throat. His condition is serious. Mr. de Rothschild states that he knew Tebbitt as a boy, and helped him on ■everal occasions. Finally he sent him to Australia, where he followed the occupation of a leather merchant's agent for 10 years in Australia. He arrived from Melbourne in March last. His wife is still in Australia. Tebbett was charged at Bow-street today with shooting with intent to murder, and was remanded for a week. His solicitor stated that prisoner's Hindi was affected by influenza and the over-study of chemistry.
