A REMARKABLE WRECK.
BEFORE AND AFTER THE GALE—DANISH BARQUENTiNE BLOWN ASHORE NEAR WANGANUI HEADS.
The Carla left (Newcastle on August 15 with a cargo of coal for the Wanganui gasworks. When she arrived off the bar no' tug was available, but later on the steamer Gertie made several ineffectual attempts to tow her in. There was a heavy gale and sea at the time the Carla commenced to drag towards the beach. During the attempts to get the tow rope aboard, the Gertie had come too close under the vessel's bow, with the result that the jib-boom crashed on to the steamer's deck, smashing a lifeboat into matchwood, snapping oIT the davits, partly demolishing the deckhouse, and nearly carrying away the funnel. The Carta's jib-boom was also smashed, and all headsail gear wrecked. Consequently, she was in a helpless state, and the captain and crew, noticing that she was drifting into great danger, managed to board the Gcrtio, The Carla's anchors held for some 50 hours after tiiis, but finally she was driven ashore when the cables snapped about three miles north of Wanganui Heads.
