BOXING.
The carnival of the Northern Boxing Association, which took place on Monday evening must have 'been a financial success, 'but, outside af the Holt—Kronaust contest, the other bouts were not of a very interesting nature. The bantam class was poorly represented, and it was a pity that a 'bay 7st was allowed to compete m the final against a lad nearly a stone heavier. It only causes unfavourable comment. The bout between Holt artfl KrOTmivat was a fast and exciting one, the latter making an especially fine showing. In the opening rounds he seemed all at sea, and evidently it was his first experience in the ring, for when he found his feet he made a much different showing, and was deoidedly unlucky not to get the decision. Personally, I think, as artother round could not be ordered, that a draw would have been a good decision. Tho contest betweenPoolev and Barclay was disappointing. The former hardly boxed in his best form, while Barclay's strong forte was rushing, in which he did very little damage. The professionals' bout was interesting while it lasted, but Murphy's condition could harcDy have .been first-class for him to tire as quickly as he did. It would have given more satisfaction had the committee insisted on the men being weighed, for the announcement both men 9st lOlbs -was farcical, Murphy appearin"' to be considerably heavier than his opponent. Griffin was very well and thoroughly deserved the victory. Lovers of boxing will welcome the ann ounce merit that a return match is to be decided in Auckland on November 9th between Tracey and Hannan, and the bout should attract a record house.
