NEW COUNCILLORS.

FOUR APPOINTMENTS PROBABLE. FROM THE LOWER HOUSE, LA WRY, HALL, STEWARD, ANI> DILLON. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. In the last three years death or retirement has been responsible for the creation of no less than eight vacancies in the Legislative' Council. Of these, tho Hons. H. Scotland, R. J. H. Reeves, F. Trask, W. C. Smith, H. Feldwick, and J. Holmes have passed away, and Messrs. T. Kennedy Mac Donald and Mahilta. have retired. No appointments have up to the present been made to fill the vacancies, but to-day it is understood, on good authority, that seats 3fi the Upper House have tiecn offered to the following gentlemen, who are retir» ing from the House of Representatives! at the end of the session:— SIP. WILLIAM STEWARD. F. LAWRY. C. HALL. • A. DILLON. SIR WiM. STEWARD. The Hon. Sir Wm. Jukes Steward,, K. 8., was born in Reading, Berkshire, in 1841. Arriving in New Zealand iu 18G2, ho was engaged in commercial pursuits in Christchurch until 1867, and from 1867 to 1900 he was actively engaged in journalism. He was member of Oa.maru County District in the Otago Provincial Council in 1875, a member (without portfolio) of the Provincial Executive, and entered the House of Representatives as member for Waitaki in 1871. He waa Speaker from 1891 to 1893, and was knighted in 1902. With 40 sessions to his credit, Sir Wm. Steward is the Fathe* of the House at the present time. MR. F. LAWRY. Mr Frank La wry was born at Bleadon, Somersetshire,' England, in 1844. He was the son of William Lawrv, farmer and Methodist Minister, and married in 1870 the daughter of the late Benjamin Davies, Auckland. Educated at Weston-super-Mare, 'Mr Lawrv arrived in New Zealand in 1803 by the ship Ulcoates, engaging in farming. He was chairman of the Epsom Road Board for thirteen years; member of the Auckland Education Board for two years, and was returned to Parliament for South Franklin in 1881. Mr Lawrv was defeated for Manukau in 1884 by Sir M. O'Rourke, but elected for North Franklin in 1887, and for Parnell at the next election. He has represented that constituency ever since, and has sat in the House for 29 years. He ma appointed 'Senior Government whip in 1891, resigning that position in 1894, and has been a member of the Stock Committee, Railway and other committees of the House. Mr La-wry is a Past Master of Lodge Manukau Freemasons* MR. CHARLES HALL. Mr. Charles Hall was born in Mal.ton, York, in 1843. He was the son of George Hall, of Mai ton, and Ma ria, da ughter of John Simpson, Malton. He married firstly Eliza Smith, of Malton, and secondly, Marian Dinsda.le, Malton. Educated at the British school, and Richardson's Academy, Malton. He was a member of theWoodville IRoad Board, 1883-86, and chairman in 1884, and member of Woodville licensing EtenJch 'J.884, chairman 1884; member Waipawa County Council 1884, chairman 1889; member Hawke'a Bay .Land Board. 1886-1903. Mr Hall became M.P. in 1887, and Coroner for Woodville district in 1901-3. He _ was elected Waipawa Licensing Commissioner 1895-98, and M.H.E- 1893-96, and 1899 for Waipawa to date. Member of Hawke's Bay Board Education 1001-4* 1804-6. MR. ALFRED DILLON. M<r. Alfred Diljm is member foil Hawke's Bay, and is a very old resident of that province. He has served on local bodies., and at the elections of 1905 contested. Hawke's Bay seat ill •Liberal interests against Sir Win. Russell, defeating him by 3138 votes to 2095. This was the first time the electorate had returned a Liberal member for many years.
