BIG MAORI MEETING.
(From Our Own Correspondent) TE KUITI, this day. The big Maori meeting at Te Kuiti opened on Saturday, when Sir James Carroll was welcomed to the town by the Mayor, after speeches by resident and visiting natives. Pepene Eketone addressed the gathering, and was followed by the Hon. A. T. Ngata. and Sir James Carroll. The subjects discussed included Maori customs, combining of the Maoris in both islands, religion, the law of the country, and the young Maori party. On Sunday afternoon over a thousand natives were addressed by the Rev. Dawson, Secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, and Mr. Isit't, M.P., on the temperance question in view of the coming Maori poll. These speakers also addressed a pakeha gathering in the evening.
