CARGO BROACHING.

TWO WHARF LABOURERS ARRESTED. On Saturday while the discharge of cargo was proceeding aboard the s.s. Rimutaka the attention of an officer was attracted by a bundle of goods wrapped in a mackintosh, and left lying in the hold. Investigation strengthened tho suspicion that all was not right, and the bundle was kept under observation, as also was another and similar bundle, also wrapped in a mackintosh. At knockoff time one of tho bundles was picked up by a wharf labourer named John Buchanan, who was working 011 the ship, and carried on. deck, wliere he was accosted by a ship's officer. He at once flung ■the parcel overboard, and jumped to the ship's side, avowing the intention of drowning himself. The officer pulled him back, and the water police, who had been advised of the circumstances, came aboard and arrested him. The other parcel in tho hold was not claimed, but this morning the police arrested a young man named Bert Bczard, on certain circumstances connecting him with it. At tho Police Court this morning Buchanan was charged with broaching cargo on board tlie s.s. Rimutaka and stealing three singlets (value 19/6) and two pairs of drawers (value 13/G), the pro-perty of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Bczard was cha.rged with stealing from the Rimutaka a pair of boots, a safety ra/xjr, two silk blouses, and two muslin blouses, valued at £3 10/. The case was remanded till Wednesday on the application of Mr Matthews, and application for bail was refused.
