MASTERS AND MATES.

APPLICATION FOR EXEMPTION. (By Telegraph.—Press Assodatkui.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The dispute between the Merchant Service (iuild and larger shipping companies, comprising the Union Steam Ship Compan.v, Huddart, Parker and Co., Maoriland Steam Ship Company, Blackball Coal Company and Westport Ooal Company, was heard by the Conciliation Council to-day. The dispute was heard in committee. The guild is asking for higher wages, overtime rates, holidays and time off! Application for exemption was made bv Huddart. Parker and Co. on the ground that by the decision of the Supreme Court it was held that the company did not come under the Act. The point will be considered. All the clauses in the claims wore discussed, but no agreement was arrived at on any particular point. Many matters could have been arranged to the satisfaction of both parties, but it was considered advisable by a majority of the Council that the whole matter should be again considered at a future meeting to be held on September 19th. The place of meeting has not definitely been decided upon. It mav be Dunedin, but in all probability it will be Wellington.
