SUBURBAN REFUSE CARTS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—During the past few months, following on the advent of Auckland's periodical plague scare, 1 have watched with interest the worthy efforts of our able Mayor to arouse the citizens sufficiently to recognise the all too obvious fact that Auckland City is badly in need of a thorough clean up before it can hold its head as high as it would otherwise be justified in doing. While certain of the community have responded to and supported Mr. Parr's efforts, I cannot understand why some of our suburban bodies have not so far wakened up to see the risk they arc running of allowing the evil to spread beyond the city boundaries. I refer to those governing bodies of suburbs where refuse carts axe unknown. To come to my personal interest, I quote the Bemuera district, in which I hav.; resided for the past two years. This suburb justly holds the reputation of being second to none in New Zealand for beauty and other advantages, but coming from a city where sanitation and cleanliness takes precedence of all municipal matters, I ciyild not but wonder what primitive body governed so large and beautiful an area wh,en I learnt that refuse carts were not included in the Board's maintenance grants, and that those responsible hummed and hawed as to the necessity of undertaking suck expense. A body with the interests of the community at heart would not let the question of finance rule such a matter—the purity of their district and the health of its people would precede questions of beautifying and such improvements.—:! am, etc, GEEENLAKE,

London.
