A five-roomed house in South Dunedin, occupied by Mr. Johnston (carter), was burned down earl} 7 this morning. Johnston's effects were insured in the Phoenix for rCHifi, and the house (owned by Mr. Cook, a railway servant) was insured in the Commercial Union for £285. INWERCARGILL ITEMS. DrVERGARGILL, this day. •lames McWatt, a second-hand dealer, was charged with keeping liquor for sale in the no-license district. Evidence showed that in two months accused had procured forty gallons of 'beer. He was tin'-d S-'.'iO. The Presbyterian Church, a wooden ouilding at North Invercargill, was destroyed by fire this morning. It was insured for £250. STATE COAL DEPOTS. DUNEDIN, this day. Af ft meeting of the Carriers anod Coal Merchants' Union of Employers a resolution was carried protesting emphatically against the Government proposal to am"nd the law to enable the State depot to deal in coals other than State, which, as far as Dunedin is concerned, seemingly affects close on 100 coal merchants and their employees. Co-opertaion of kindred coal merchants associations throughout the Dominion is invited. CONCEALMENT OF BIRTH. CHMSTCHURCH, this day. In the Supreme Court, Mary Brown wa< charged that on April 17 she had disposed of the dead body of her child witn intent to conceal the fact that she had given birth to a child. The case for the prosecution was that prisoner had admitted having been delivered of a male child which was dea-d. and that she had thrown it into the river Avon. A female child had been found in the Avon about that time. It might not have iiecn the child of accused, but that did not affect the fact that concealment of birth had taken place. Accused was con-vici-etl, but sentence was deferred pending a decision by the Court of Appeal on law points raised.
