THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.
CXT7 AMD BUBUBBAX BEATS. PREPARING TO DO BATTLE. Now that the electoral boundaries have been adjusted, and only about 12 weeks will elapse before the elections take place, candidates may be expected to announce themselves without further delay. Manukau has been a good deal altered. It now takes in Ellcrslic, and becomes more of a suburban seat, embracing as it does Onehunga, Tamaki, and parts of One-tree Hill, Epsom, Mount Roskill, Otahnhu, and Mount Eden. A Liberal candidate, in Mr. R. D. Stewart, an in- ; spector under the Education Board, definitely announces his intention of ecn- | testing the seat against Mr. F. W. Lang, j the sitting member. Mr. Stewart contested the* seat on a previous occasion I against the late Mr. Kirkbride. Mr. J. B. Morton intends contesting the ManuI kau constituency as a Liberal. Mr. Chas. ! Bagley is also a probable candidate, and ' states that he will be in a position to j make a definite announcement as to his intentions in the course of a day or two. In Auckland East no candidate has yet been announced against Mr. A. M. Myers, though it is definitely stated by the local : Reform League that a candidate has been ! found to contest the seat in the Opposi- : tion interests.
For Auckland West, Mr. C. H. Poole is promised a contest with Mr. W. Wilson, of Ponsonby. A deputation is to wait on Dr. McDowell in the course of a day or two, and ask him to accept nomination for this seat. Mr. T. I* Thompson is also a possible candidate.
Parnell is robbed of EUerslie. and becomes a more compact constituency. At present Mr. Lawry is face! •with two certain opponents, in Messrs. E. G. B. Moss, Oppositionist, and Mr. J. Mack, who sails under Labour colours.
In Gref Lynn the Hon. G. Fowlds may possibly have as his opponent Mr. G. Murray, Mayor of Grey Lynn, who. is at present considering his reply to a requisition. If Mr. Murray stands, it will be as a straight-out Oppositionist.
Waitemata transfers to Marsden the Mahurangi, Pulioi, and Warkworth ridings, and so loses mucli of its strength as an Opposition stronghold. Mr. Phillipps, the present member, will not seek re-election, and the candidates already in the field are: Messrs. A. Harris, Opposition, and E. Alison, jun., Indepen-dent-Liberal. The names of both Mr. W. J. Napier or Mr. W. J. Speight have been mentioned as likely to provide a Liberal candidate. Mr. Napier to-day received a representative deputation, and promised to give the matter his consideration. Mr. Speight, seen by a "Star* representative, said that he had definitely made up his mind to become a candidate at the next election, but he was at present not prepared to say for what constituency. Parnell and Eden, as well as Waitemata, are spoken of as likely to deputationise Mr. Speight to accept nomination. In City Central, Mr. A. E. Glover will have to do battle against a Socialist candidate in Mr. M. J. Savage. Mr. Napier, should he decline to contest Waitemata, is a likely candidate for the City. It is highly improbable that the Opposition will contest the seat.
