AMONG THE FARMERS.
THE GOVERNOR'S APPRECIATION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. Th e biennial conference of agricultural and pastoral societies opened this morning. The Governor opened the proceedings. His Excellency said he was in fullest sym, pathy with the work of agricultural societies. Very valuable results could be obtained from the employment of scientific experts in agriculture combined with the practical experience of agriculturists. He described, the working of the Central Chamber of Agriculture at Home, and said what most impressed him about that institution was the fact that it had always kept itself distinct as an organisation from party political controversy. It was an impartial medium, and would acquire prompt response from the Government. His Excellency concluded with a warm tribute to the work of agricultural societies in New Zealand, and to the reception accorded him in different parts of the country. "Nothing," be said, " has made me feel more as if I were at Homo among my old friends, than those occasions when I have been surrounded by a large group of kindly, genial, welcoming farmers in New Zealand."
