At the City Council meeting last night the Mayor reported that his mission to England in connection with the claims of Adelaide to a Lord Mayoralty was futile. Mr. Harcourt (Seceretary of State for the Colonies) informed him that the Imperial Government had decided not to grant additional Lord Mayors to any city of the Empire. A STATE HOTEL. (Received 10.15 a,m.) PERTH, this day. The State hotel for the year ended June made a profit of £1687, compared with £2355 in the previous year. The decrease is attributed to a falling off in trade. John Colquit, a halfe-caste, murdered his wife at Wagga yesterday, almost severing her head, afterwards committing suicide. The couple had been living apart. Colquit was a well-known athlete. A POISONED TANK. MELBOURNE, August 14. Two men drank from a tank in the country near Shepparton. One died and the other is recovering. The tank contained rabbit-poison. There is great indignation at such being left unprotected. A FATAL DRAUGHT. SYDNEY, August 14. The Government analyst reports th*t the liquor drunk by the man found deai in the street on August 6 consisted of methylated spirits and burnt sugar.
