Commenting editorially on the refusal of certain Auckland skating rinks to admit blueja-ckets, the Christ church " Press " says: •* The incident is an unpleasant one. It savours a little too much of the English dislike of the uniform that provoked Kipling's famous protest. In one case the proprietor frankly admits that his patrons would object to the presence of sailors as with whom they would not <*arc to associate, so we must not biame Vm, but the snobbish people he caters for. Doubtless if war broke out to-morrow these particular people, having suddenly discovered that Jack was the saviour of Ills country, would sing " Sons of the Sea" with infinite zest. In the other case, it appears to be merely a matter of dress. If the bluejackets were to wea» civilian dress, which is impossible, they would be admitted. It is regrettable that any member of His Majesty's foreas should be debarred fror.i entering a plac? of public entertainment merely because he is in uniform. Sueh truckling to snobbery of the worst type is quite out ot place in a country which depends for its existence on the Navy, and which professes to be so proud both of its traditions and its men.
