MT. EDEN GOAL TROUBLE.

BOARD OF INQUIRY OPENED. ADJOURNED TILL MONDAY MORNING. The Board of Inquiry, consisting of Messrs. C. C. Kettle and E. C. Cutten, set up to investigate certain charges relative to the administration of affairs at the Mt. Eden Gaol, embracing allegations of favouritism and misconduct, commenced its sittings at the gaol buildings this morning, but after a preliminary discussion an adjournment was granted till Monday morning, when the Board will sit at the Magistrate's Courz. Application was made to allow the proceedings to be opened to the Pr?s3, but Mr. Kettle, chairman of the Board, said he was reluctantly competed to refuse "-e request, for the reason that he had received no instructions from Wellington *■" permit the presence of reporters. It is understood chat the accused warder, in the absence of his counsel, who was temporarily delayed, requested to be supplied with the names of his accusers, but some difficulty appears to have arisen on the matter, and the adjournment was granted to enable the pqint to be definitely settled, there being apparently a disinclination to put anybody forward in the position of prosecutur.* A number of warders, stated to be responsible for sending to the Department a letter which resulted in the Board of Inquiry being set up. w :•■• through their legal representative, whether they appeared as prosecutors or not, but so far as can be gathered the n lestion was left unanswered. It is possible, owing to ihc disinclination to put forward a prosecutor from amongst the gaol staff, that the Department of Justice may be represented by counsel when the Board resumes on Monday morning.
