FOOTBALL IN AUSTRALIA.
THE LEAGUE MATCH. HEW ZEALAND BEATS QUEENS. LAND. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright) BRISBANE, July 8. Tie weather was fine for the match between the New Zealand and Queensland League teams. The attendance was 10-.000. ( There were several alterations in both teams. In the Queensland team O'Brien, Heidke, and Murtagh replaced Trueman, Munro j and Jones, and in the New Zealand 13, Asher, Gillett, McDonald, Mason, and Dunning replaced Winder, Siddells, Keene, Stanaway, and Milne. New Zealand, team wa consideded much stronger than on Wednesday, when (they were defeated. In the first.half the New Zealanders played with the breeze, and showed brilliant combination. The Queensland-f|-s tackled and fumbled badly. The play was very fast and strenuous, several players being temporarily disabled. The New Zealanders had much the better of this half. They badly beat the Queenslanders in the scrum, and scored most of their points as a .result of this superiority. The score at this stage was: New Zealand 13 points, Queensland 2. The second half was vigorously contested, both sides showing splendid, combination, while tie tackling was deadly. The New Zealanders were frequently on the defensive, and the Queenslanders lost several certain tries through fumbling when close to the visitors' line. The closing stages were very exciting. The Qneenslanders scored tries twice, the remainder of the points being the result of penalty kicks. The final scores were: New Zealand, 18 points; Queensland j 14. Seager, McDonald, Mitchell 'and. SpTague scored tries for New Zealand, Seager converting three. UNIVERSITY TOURISTS. BEATEN BY METROPOLITAN TEAM. SYDNETf, July 9. The weather was dull and attendance small for the match, between the combined New Zealand Universities' team and the Metropolitan team. The first half was fast and even, and principally a forward game, ending with the scores: Sydney, six points; New Zealand, three. The ground became slippery, and prevented the backs of either getting going. In the second half the locals outplayed the visitors, scoring 16 to New Zealand's three. The game ended: Metropolitan, 22 points; New Zealand, six points.
For New Zealand J. Farie and Curtayne scored a try each. (Received 9.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The members of the New Zealand University team are passengers to Wellington by the Ulimaroa.
