MUTUAL AID SOCIETY.

The first annual meeting of the Mutual Aid itiooiecy in connection with eniiih ana Laughey, 1/td., was held on i<'riday evening, iliui inst., at thu .federal iia.l Llub iiooni, when 'about 230 members and •Mends, including Ms. and i.virs. A. U. Uaughey, were present. The president of the society, .Mr. A. .Mewburn, occupied tile -chair, and a very excellent and interesting report of tue year's work, and also the balance-sheet, were received and adopted. Mr. Caughey, in a very pleasing speech, spoke of the good work done and the cordial feeling which prevailed, and which was increasing owing to the Society's existence. An election for two vicerpresidents resulted in Messrs. Atkinsdn and Shine being elected, Mr. B. L. Bagnall being appointed auditor. The following were re-elected for a further period: —Patrons, Mr. W. H. Smith and Mr. A. C. Caughey; trustees, Mr. W. Astley, Mr. H. Blakely and Miss Burton; hon. treasurer, Mr. T. E. Gooding ; hon. sec, Mr. S. L. Barry. A hearty vote of thanks vras passed to the firm for their generous support and interest; also to the retiring officers. On behalf of the members Mr. Caughey made a handsome presentation to the secretary for his work during the year; Mr. Barry briefly responding. To further sho\v his appreciation and interest and to forward the work of tie society, Mr. Caughey very generously offered to place his cottage by the sea at the disposal of the executive for the benefit of any members who may be run down and in need of rest or change. The offer was received with much warmth and loud applar.sn, and accepted by the j president on behalf of the society.
