POLICE COURT.

(Before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M.) ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. A man of about 35 years, named Robt. Barker, was charged on seven counts with having obtained money by false pretences, to wit, valueless cheques. The amount of money involved was about £24, and the people accused received this from were, Maurice O'Connor, licensee Thistle Hotel; Allen McDonald, livery stable-keeper, Hamilton; John Graham, licensee Pukekohe Hotel; Geo. Crosby, boarding-house keeper, Paeroa; and \Ym~. Agnew, licensee of Thames Hotel, Auckland. Accused stayed at the various places, representing himself as a man of means looking out to purchase land. In each case he asked and received a blank cheque, which he filled in for small sums, and marked payable at some other town. Accused had nothing to say. He pleaded guilty to all the charges, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

(Before Mr. E. Gerard, J.P.) THE DKUNKARDS. A lengthy list of inebriates had to be dealt with at the Court this morning. Thomas Symonds, an old man, for a third offence, was fined £1, in default 7 days. Robert Douglas, a second ofl'ender, expressed a desire to go to Rotoroa. He was fined instead 5/, in default 4S hours. John Dwyer, a frequent offender, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. Wm. Ilendrick, for drunkenness and resisting arrest, was fined 10/ or 48 hours. Five first offenders 'were vonvActed and discharged. One was a very old woman, who about five years ago was before the Court for a similar charge. Four first offenders forfeited their bail of £1 each. IDLE AND DISORDERLY. A young man named Walter Lister denied that he was an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient means of support. The evidence tendered for the prosecution "was that accused was found on the wharf about 3 a.m. to-day. When questioned by a constable he admitted having slept in Winstone's yards, Nelsonstreet, and further said he had not been in a bed for three or four weeks. Hβ had about 2/ on him when arrested. Iv his own- statement accused said he came from the Main Trunk with £7. After he spent this he got work in Winstone's yards, and also on several scows. Yesterday he was working on the Nor'-West, unloading stone, and was to have returned this morning. Asked why he told the constable that he had not slept in a bed for five weeks, accused answered that the constable was having a bit of a pantomime with him. Accused was convicted and discharged.

Henry Arthur Tonge had a similar charge preferred against Mm. The man was found sleeping on a doorstep this morning, and then only had a penny in his possession. It was known that accused Diad i>een knocking about the streets during the night for the last week, and he himself stated he only had one meal yesterday. Accused stated he had regular work in a stable, looking after horses, but when questioned said- he hadn't found out where the stables were yet. The man came from Te Kuiti last week, and his manner was very strange in the box. He was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment.

ADJOUKHED. •.-The case against Samuel Briggs, charging him with, being an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient lawful means of support, was remanded until Monday. Arthur Little, charged with having been drunk, was remanded for a week's medical treatment.

The charges against Wm. Betts were for drunkenness, breach of prohibition order, and one of being an incorrigible rogue. The cases were remanded until Monday. ■;■■
