Th; Bey. J. B. Burgin, curate of St. Hary _ Cathedral, Parnell, has been appointed vicar of St. Andrew's Church, Epsom. The. "ducking-stool" of English village days was the subject of some' remarks _y Mr. J. H. Upton in his lecture before tne Auckland Institute meeting on Monday evening. Mr. Upton put before his audience a model of ;>. ducking-stool, which he had obtained in England during his recent visit. The original appliance was an ISft beam balance on two wheels with a stool at one end of the .earn. In the days of its use, scolding wives, if found guilty by a magistrate of excessive nagging, were bound to the j stool, driven through the village to the village pond, and "there dipped by the swinging of the beam. This was "not a matter of larrikinism, but the result of magisterial inquiry. The model of the stool had been Drought back for presentation to the Auckland Museum. Mr James Allen, M.P., who is at present delivering political speeches in the South, will arrive in Auckland on Sunday, June IS, and will speak at Devonport on Monday, 19th inst. On the 20th inst. Mr. Allen leaves on a trip to the South Sea Islands, visiting Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji, and thence proceeding to Sydney and Melbourne, returning to Dunedin on July 25th, via Hobart and Bluff. Mr. Allen will (says the "Otago Daily Times") he accompanied on his visit: to the Islands and Australia _y his two daughters.
