Sit;, —Being a spectator at the late fire in Grey Lynn, 1 can endorse all that "Greater Auckland" says in your Saturday's issue in Tegard to the "benefit that would come to Grey Lynn ratepayers if we only had the Greater Auckland in full working order. If a vote had been •tafcen the next day after the fire. I think from expressions- I heard amongst the cro-wd, it would have been carried by a gtood majority. • It was .something disgraceful to stand: and see firemen just sprnakling a light spray of water upon a house that was nearly -burnt out. Firemen, with hoses their hands -were ca_t_ig out for waiter to foe turned on, and just as the fire was at its worst one of the stand-pvpes, either through not being screwed .'own far enough or being, in a bad state of repair, broke off. and after a while someone thought of fixing another one. .During this time two ether houses wens 'being attacked in a fierce manner by the fire, and at this time, when everyone fully expected the three houses were doomed to destruction, the city motor dashed up amidst the cheers of the crowd, and in about one minute had their h-ctees in full play. If our Grey Lynn CouncEllors could have heard the opinions expressed afoout their indifference in jjegard to safeguarding tbe rate-payeics against fire, their eaTs -would have tingled.— _ am, etd, | VIGILANT.
