The military occupation of the champagne districts has already cost £920,000. The drivers' strike in Adelaide has been settled as the outcome of negotiations between the men and the Employers' Federation. King George attended the grand opera at Covent Garden Theatre. His Majesty warmly congratulated Madame Melba upon her singing in the role of Juliette in "Romeo et Juliette." London newspapers publish favourable notices of the first recital of Miss Leila Doubleday, the Australian singer, in the Queen's Hall, and the "Standard" says that she has every prospect of a highly successful career. ° " Mr. King O'Malley (Federal Minister for Home Affairs) suggests that if the Governor-General desired to visit Sydney and other cities, he should do as the President of the United States did— secure apartments in an hotel or rent a cottage.
