Alfred Slirubb, the marvellous little teu-milc runner, did not give Ljungstrom, the seemingly invincible Swede, a chance in a twelve-miles match race recently. Shrubb. however, good runner though he undoubtedly is, seems lo have taken leave. of bis senses. ] fe announced his intention of racing a horse a level ten miles' ma tell. The race came off in Philadelphia on April 2nd. ami Shrubb never had a look-in from the start. 'Ihe horse, Jimmy Michael by name, was first home by llmin. -Msec, covering tho distance in 4'2min. i'ssec. There was never a man living that could approach anything near I his lime for ten miles. Negotiations are now going on in the matter of another International athletic contest between the combined Oxford and Cambridge am! Harvard and Yale (C.S.A.I teams. Failing joint action on the part of the English I'niver-ities. it is probable Cambridge will oppose Harvard "on their own." Schofield. Ihe F.nglish athlete, walked -Jo miles at Heine Hill on May 20 in I! hours :i7 minutes 7 seconds, which constitutes a world's record. Schofield is a member of the Surrey Walking Club, and was a first-class performer in the Engli.-l. walking championships hist year.
