» DAVIS CUP TENNIS CONTEST. SOUTHERN- CENTRES' CLAIMS. "WELLINGTON, Thursday. In response to a request of the council of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, the Wellington and Canterbury Associations hove forwarded reasons why the Davis cup match should be played In'their respective cities. One of the reasons given by Wellington why the tournament should be held here is the fart that this city is the best situated centre In the Dominion, and can provide a better gate for any sports gathering than any other city in the Dominion. The secretary of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association writes:—"My association has obtained from the board of control of the Canterbury Cricket Association, Limited, the body controlling Lancaster Park, an offer to the Australasian Association of £500 for the contest, the board to provide a first-class ground, thoroughly suitable for such contest, and pay all cost of stands, advertising, and preparation of ground, etc., pay the Australasian Association a clear sum of £300, and take the whole of the takings from all sources. In case this offer should not meet with the approval of the Australasian Association, my association hns obtained from the board of control of Lancaster Park the following alternative offer:—To prov.de and prepare the ground for play as In the offer already set out, the cost of the stand accommodation for, say. 4000 people, expenses of advertising, and gatekeepers' wages, to be a first charge on the Bate takings, the board of control to take 20 per cent of the nett takings, leaving 80 per cent for the association."

The Auckland and Otago Associations have signified their intention of supporting the Canterbury Association in nominating Christchurch as the locale of the big fixture, and it is therefore possible to make a pretty correct estimate as to how votes will be cast. This hoe: been done, with the following result: —For Wellington: Wellington, eight votes; Taranakl. four; Hawke's Bay. four; .Wanganui. three: Nelson, one: Marlborough, three: total, 23. For Phristchmrch: Canterbury, seven; Otago, five; Southland, three; Wjfestland, two; Auckland, six: total, 23. If the voting is cast as above, the task of deciding where the Davis cup will be played will practically rest with the chairman of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. That office Is at present held by Mr. C. W. Griffiths, of Blenheim.
