ASSISTANCE In connection with the great.earthquake in Messina, we understand j that Mr. Charles Rhodes, Consular ; &M for Italy in Auckland, has received from the Italian Government bronze medal! and diplomas, with instructions sent them to four prominent citizens bl Auckland for special services rendered jo the Italian nation. The gentlemen « question are Mr. A. M. Myers, JLP., m merly Mayor of Auckland;. Mr.- 'T..W< Leys, editor of the "Evening Star?'; Mr. W. Sholto Douglas, editor "New Zealand Herald"; and the late R. A. Carr, formerly Consular Agent for Italy in uYi| city, all of whom took a special,par} in connection with the relief of Buflerinj caused by the great earthquake fin Calabria, which took place on 28th, Dfr cember 1908. The medal in question was specially struck to honour those who, in various parts of the worloj actively responded to an almost 1 universal wish to assist in mitigating a dre»d' ful calamity which had fallen Upon pW of the human race.
