INTERCOLONIAL STEAM SERVICE.

A WELLINGTON SCHEME. r; *' r TO CUT OUT AUCKLiAND. t (By Telejrrapli.—Press Association.) n fWELLINGTON, this day. t At a meeting of the. council of the Chamber of Commerce, the question of t mail connection between Australia and p New Zealand was considered. The con- s sensus of opinion was that the needs of s the Dominion as a whole would be best served if the inward European mail, i which now leaves Sydney for Auckland a on Wednesday, were to leave Sydney for 1 Wellington direct on Monday. It would r then, in the ordinary course, reach Welt lington on Friday forenoon, Auckland : on Saturday morning, and Dunedin on \ Saturday evening, which, it was consid- i ered, would be a great improvement in every direction. The council felt that if t such a change in the intercolonial ( steamer time-table involved any extra ] expense, the cost might fairly be met by a subsidy, and, to effect this, it was \ decided to approach t-he Geve-rninent and the steamship companies concerned.
