DEVONPORT WATERWORKS.

PUMPING ENGINEER'S REPORT.

A report on the water supply and condition of the plant was submitted by the pumpicg engineer (Mr. F. P. Moren) at last night's meeting of the Devonport Borough Council. The following extracts are of special interest:

For the year ending April 20th, 1911, the quantity of water pumped for the year was 184,700,000 gallons, an increase of 45* millions over that of the previous year. Taking the census population of 7040, this gives a daily average per head f.o 71 gallons. This average largely exceeds that of last year, which was 58, except for the four summer months when if reached 7O*. This summer being the driest we have had for thirteen years, and the large number of new supplies connected, probably accounts for the rise in the average. The lake at its lowest was 34 inches below its winter level, and 14 inches below its lowest of thirteen years ago. The largest monthly quantity pumped was in January, which amounted to 22,200,000 gallons, when at times both- plants had to be used to keep pace with the demand. The arches and wall at the .back of boilers which were showing defects at the time of the last visit of the Waterworks Committee, are now on the point of collapse and require rebuilding. It was resolved that the Waterworks Engineer and the Foreman of Works confer in connection with the matter of the necessary repairs, and. prepare specifications with a view to calling for tenders for the work. It was further decided that the Waterworks Committee pay a visit to the plant.
