ILL-TREATING A DRUDGE.
WOMAN SENT TO GAOL.
LONDON, May 2.
Mrs. Wilesmith and a bailiff have been sentenced to two years' imprisonment on a charge of ill-treating a servant girl, 13 years of age. Mrs. Wilesmith's son, who was charged with the same offence, was bound over under the First Offenders- Act.
Mrs. Wilesmith, a Worcester lady, her son, and a bailiff employed by her were charged with terribly ill-treating a girl servant, aged 13 years. It was alleged that the girl was mercilessly beaten, and her wounds salted. Mrs. Wilesmith was a prominent Christian Scientist and a Salvation Army worker. There were said to be 34 permanent scars on the girl, many being 4in .in length. The girl was taken from an orphanage when she was seven years old, and it was alleged made a household drudge.
