The Ihinedin Drainage Board, in response to overtures made by the Christchureh Drainage Board, decided to join with other similar bodies in New Zealand in opposing the bill. Mr. Marlow sas he thought this was not only a justifiable but a wise step, as the bill proposed to take away from the Drainage Boards the control of sanitary work, for a plumber who did not succeed in obtaining his certificate from a Drainage Board could appeal for registration to a magistrate: The suggestion was'made that if legislation dealing with the registration of plumbers is to be attempted there shoiild be a system of reciprocity between the Drainage Boards of at least the four centres in regard to the recognition of plumbers' certificates. At present a plumber licensed by the Dunedin Drainage Board would, on going to, say, Christchurch, have to pass the plumbers' examination prescribed by the Christchureh Drainage Board before he could do sanitary work in connection with their system. Mr. Douglas pointed out the disability of plumpers in this respect, and Mr. Christie suggested a universal examination applicable at least to the four centres. Mr. Small declared that it was the want of some such system that had mainly led to the introduction of the Plumbers' Registration Bill.
