DRAINING SWAMPS.

GOVERNMENT UNDERTAKINGS. ■IN BAY OF PLENTY DISTCRICT. The Government has decided; to undertake the drainage of the Rangitaiki and Tarawera swamps in the Bay of Plenty. The work on the Tarawera. swamp is estimated 'to cost £23,100, and on the Rangitaiki £26,000, making a total c* penditure of £50,000. The dredging and straightening of the Tarawera river will cost £11,400, and the outlet for the •Rangitaiki river about £11,600. The old drains, are already being cleaned out, and the machinery, which has been purchased for dredging the new cute,.will be erected shortly; For the purpose of allocating the expenditure the whole of the Rangitaiki drainage district ihaa been divided into two subdivisions, for. which the following are some of 'the principal allocations:— . TABAWEBA SUBDIVISION. Tarawera River, Improvement of same, dredging and straightening (by new cots,- etc., from mouth, to lakes, and widening outlet from lakes to main river 11,400 (Omehu Stream drain, from mouth to Awaltl I'aku .*. •.. 3,700 Tarawera western drain, from junction of Awaltl Paku with Tarawera JUVer south.
