Referring to ihe telegram from Mr. Wright, MJ?., denying that the temperance party in Wellington ihad any knowledge of Sir Joseph Ward's alleged offer to make the 55 per cent majority the vital issue, Mr. L. M. laitt explains that he did not state that ithe Prime Minister offered to stake the existence of the Government on the 55 per cent issue. What he did say was that .Sir Joseph Ward declared to the -members of the prohibition party that if .they insisted he was prepared to fulfil his promise to inclirfe reduction of the majority as a provision of the bill, however impossible it might ibe to carry it at that juncture.
