■ THE FIRST POLLS. 123 SEATS DECIDED. LIBERAL WINS IN LANCASHIRE BONAR LAW DEFEATED. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright) LONDON. December 3. The polling for the general election in the United Kingdom commenced yesterday, when voting took place in 55 borough constituencies. In view of the great issues at stake, it was expected that the polling would be heavy, and this expectation was fully borne out. In nearly every constituency the polling was heavier than at the last general election. Dense, eager crowds awaited the results in many of the centres in London, despite a drizzling rain, until long after midnight. Rochester. Peckham. The Unionist gains are: — Ashton-under-Lyne. Darlington, Grimsby. King's Lynn. Salford South. Warrington. Wigan. The defeat of Mr. A. Bonar Law, a leading Unionist, for N.W. Manchester, is one of the most striking features of the present returns. Mr. Law deserted his old scat of Dulwich Hill to fight Sir Geo. Kemp, the sitting member for the seat, but he lost by 445. against a majority of 083 last election, when Mr. Joynson Hicks, conqueror of Churchill, was the Unionist candidate.
