CBy Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCBTHCH. Thursday. The first wool sale of tie season's series opened to-day, when 5520 bales were offered. There was a very large gathering of buyeis, representing t-he Home, Continental, Aineric:ui and local sections of- the trade. The wool was heavier in grease this year than I last, on account of the long spell of warm | weather, but a large portion of it was very • eirthy. This applied particularly t.> tie] wool from the plains where the north-west winds, wbieh have been so prevalent this ! spring, contiuuaily raised the dust from the | dry paddocks. In the first -two catalogues I most of tlie wool was passed, as it was I mostly from the plains, and suffered coni _iderably in condition. 'When a better selecI tion of wool ottered, competition became I spirited and continued so till the end of the sa-e. Though prices were irregular it was I considered that on the whole tihey were - very satisfactory. The wool that declined I most in value was choice halfbreds and fine ; , crossbreds, which, under competition of ; Amercian buyers lasf season, commanded • exceptionally high rates. A small quantity of merino, offered sold well, the woollen mills •as usual demand ing snch goods. Medium half-bred, and crossbred wools were lower oy _d. per lb., as compared with the openin" rates last year, 'but inferior wools and scour' Ing lots sold fully np to last year's values. when ths condition is considered. The Continental buyers operated principally In ■_•*.- •breds and pieces, and Bradford representa- - trves ptßrehased most ot the crossbred. Tlhere -was a good local demand for scourtog lots, of w-ilcb there was a consideraiile ,£ro£o-l_<__ of tiie o__er_n_a-
