VARIETY AND G"__--N_____C__, --

: Xhe company of entertainers who' styla themselves the Garrison Band and No. 3 G.A.V. Entertainers gave the first of a series of three "shows in His Majesty*. Theatre last night. The company'were assisted by a. "few professional-, and"alio by Professor Potter'and his "gynmas-ic pupils, but by far the best items" on the programme were the • displays "given""by. the fine team of men and boy athletes under the direction of Mr' Potter. • "For the exhibitions ■ the stage was converted for the time being into a-gymnasium. The first showed the pupils to advantage in work on the. .horizontal bar and -the "Roman rings, and . there was also..a; wrestling match, which looked, very real. The second act, or series of aots,,was done on horizontal bars and paraU.el bar? by Professor Potter and a few of his senior pupils. There was a little neat-somer-saulting, small boys formed a pyramid/ and two clowns did some eccentric acro.batfc work which was by no means as easy as it appeared. - Later a. team .of Maori boys formed a series of tableaux of very cleverly and very effectively .biulfc pyramids. Professor Potter also gave.a i display of. club-swinging with clubs which? ! were at the .same time torches, producing weird, bewildering effects. The rest of . the programme was composed of minstrelsy and such turns as are usually, called vaudeville. In the first part' "which; consisted mainly of a medley of song 9 with choruses and other business by.tha company arranged in a minstrel circle, .there were a few. good songs, some.comic songs, and_a good deal of dancing. It was this last which provided, all the best items in this part of the entertainment. • Little Miss Eva Reid and her liny sister ' gave a Highland dance, Messrs. Dare and. Dare a sailor's hornpipe, Mr. W. T..Chad- ; wick an Irish Jig, and the Chadwicfc troupe of dancers a Reel o' Tulloch."" A , specialty turn of some merit in the second ; part of the programme was that of Mr. : G. C. McMinn, who made, music with a ' variety of strange instruments. All. the items were received by the audience with • applause, and encores were demanded and ) given freely. Other items on the programme were: Song, "Maid of Athens, • Mr. J. F. Robertson; song, '-U-inbow,"* - Mr. Chas. Skinner- song, "Bedouin Lova • Song," very well sang by Mr. T. Mc- : Dowell; comic song, "While You're Sleep- ' ing," Mr. Geo. Tarr; song, "Davy Jones' j Locker," Mr. R. C. Clark; whistling solo, ; Mt. T. Aylet.; song, "From Where the ; Shamrock Grows," Miss Ivy Goodwill; . coon song, "Black Canary," Mr. Arthur i Austin; song, "The Whistling Bowery : Boy," Mr. F. Bishop; song, "Rose of My • Heart," Miss Walker. The Garrison Band - Orchestra played all the accompaniments ' and a few overtures excellently, and I assisted materially to give finish to the per_orma_.ee. Changes are announced for - to-night's prqgramme. • __________—__———•"
