PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

TRANSFER TO MONDAYS. (By Telegraph.—Parliameotar? Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday.

The vexed question of public holidays and the day on which they shall fall is dealt with in a bill introduced by the Hon. D. Buddo. Labour Day is fixed for the fourth Monday in October instead of the second Wednesday in October. Unions had objected that the second Wednesday was too early in the summer. Empire Day is to be observed on the fourth Monday in May, and Dominion Day is to be observed on the fourth Monday in September. The Sovereign's Birthday is to be the next succeeding Monday, and when Christmas Day or New Year's Day fall on a Sunday .the holiday is to be observed on the Monday. The bill also proposed to do away with the list of bank holidays provided T>y the schedule of the Banking Act, and to substitute the following:—New Year's Day, Good Friday, the day after Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christinas Day, the day after Christmas Day, the Sovereign's Birthday, Labour Day, Whit Monday, St. Patrick's Day, St. George's Day and St. Andrew's Day. The bill also provides that the above provisions regarding holidays being held on Mondaye shall apply to the purposes of the Shops and Offices Act.
