OUR TRADE.

AND THE AMERICAN" BtASKET.

TRIAL-SHIPMENTS. , -.0 With the re-establishment of the 'Frisco service by New Zealand-owned vessels, it is realised that the American market now offers possibilities for our. export trade in frozen meat and produce. The new service will' be inaugurated by the R.M.S. Aorangi, whicli leaves Auckland on Saturday next for, ■ Rarotonga, Papeete, and San Francisco. Nearly all her cold storage space has been taken up by an Australian ship T ment, but this is explained by the fact that this as the off-season for New Zealand meat exports. The service is subsidised by New Zealand alone, but the Union Company are in no way to blame, because practically no cold stor T age space has been reserved for Now Zealand exporters. Space was offered first in tliis country with little or; no response, and the Company consequently entered into negotiations in Australia, with the result that Mr. Sidney Kidman took up nearly all the space. He is. forwarding a large consignment, of frozen mutton and lamb to 'Frisco, . ■which, it is understood, he had some difficulty in securing, although the:Aus : tralian season commences earlier than in New Zealand. At the present time almost the whole of the local mutton and lamb is required for local consumption, and this condition of affairs will probably continue until December, when;; with the re-opening of the large freezt ing works, the export trade will be atr its height. However, the Aorangi willtake small consignments of frozen beef... and pork from New Zealand, and it is! probable that local firms may send. trial- shipments of butter and kauri- - gum. There also appears to be a sibility that the present service front the East Coast of Canada to Australia: and New Zealand, subsidised by the. Canadian Government,, may be further; extended by the line making return: trips from New Zealand to Canada; and", in fact, it is stated that during*the coming season large trial shipments will be made by this line to Montreal 'arid 'Frisco. It is understood that in the event of the experiments being successful, New Zealandexporters' "will" cater for these markets. The exports of produce from the port of Auckland during the past fortnight, amounted in value to £96j6?1, made uj' as follows: — ~"!.. ...,. . .'„'•'.: . _. "J&j]
