Sir. T. G.Sarjeant, of Dargaville, leaves 'by to-night's express on. a -visit to the South Island. Mrs. J. Masters, wife of the Mayor of Stratford, died suddenly while visiting a friend yesterday afternoon. Dr. Stuart, of Auckland, is at present on a visit to Queenstown, relieving Dr. Douglas, of the Wakatipu Hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. Allom-Pitt, English tourists, were arrivals by the mail train this morning, and are staying at the Grand Hotel. Sergeant H. Patience, of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, has been appointed instructor and drum-major of the Napier City Band. Dr. J. M, Mason, formerly Chief Health Officer for New Zealand, returned from London by the lonic to-day, -which arrived at Wellington.—Press Association. The services of the late Ca-ptain C. H. Griffith to the Anglican Church at Orepuki have been commemorated by erection of a handsome memorial altar ia St. Faith's Church there. The local "Advocate" states that the altar is the first one in any country church in Otago. Mr. Malcolm Treston, who arrivea in Auckland to-morrow morning as manager of the Hawke's Bay footballers, is an old Aucklander. Mr. Treston was formerly proprietor of the Newton Hotel, and is now manager of the Napier brewery. He is also a member of the Napier Borough, Council. The many friends of Mr. George Scutch, of the Railways Department, will be pleased to hear of his promotion to the position of etationmaster at Henderson, vice Mr. H. Pearse, transferred to Frankton Junction as goods agent and foreman. Mr. Scutch was foe many years assistant stationmaster to Mr. Charles White at EUerslie.

Mr. Edward Butt, for many years with the Northern S.S. Co. at Thames, "was presented yesterday with a purse of forty sovereigns as a mark of respect and esteem. The purse was subscribed hy representatives of the Company's customers, payers of harbour dues, carters, cab proprietors, and others. Reference was made at the meeting of the Auckland Presbytery last night to the recent death of the Rev. T. W. Runciman, -who was the first minister of St. Stephen's Church, Ponson'by, and a resolution was carried expressing regret at the death of the late veteran church, worker, and expressing sympathy with, the relatives in their deprivation. On Monday Sir Joseph Ward dispatched a cable message to Sir Wilfrid Laurier; expressing his regret at the injuries the Canadian Prime Minister had. received in the railway accident last week. The Prime Minister has also cabled congratulations to Lord Strathcona on the achievement of his ninetieja birthday. The appointment of Lord Islington as Governor of New Zealand was (referred to on Speech Day at Harrow on June 30th, at the headmaster's luncheon. Dr. the retiring headmaster, in responding to the toast of "The School," said the government of the whole world seemed to be gradually passing into the hands of Hanrow men. The Colonial Secretary, the Earl of Crew, was a Harrow man, and so was Colonel Seely, Under-Secretary for the Colonies. The Vaceroy-elect of India was a Harrow man, and the Governor-General of Canada and the Governor of New Zealand were also Harrow men.
