SUSPECTED THIEF ARRESTED. SHOWED FIGHT WITH A KNIFE Shortly after eleven o'clock last niglit Constable Claydon, who was puiroiuiig Queen-street, was given information that a man had been seen to enter the house of Mrs Blanche Scandle, ia Eden Crescent. The constable hastened to the house and looked round for signs, of the supposed burglar. Presently he saw a man, barefooted, come out from behind a fence. This man sighted the constable and promptly ran away. The constable at once gave chase and soon overtook the fugitive, who, when brought to bay, drew a knife as if to use it in defending himself. The constable ruflhed the man, however, and disarmed him before he had an opportunity of inflicting any harm. Tshe constable took his prisoner •hack to Mrs Scandle's house, and there on the lawn in front of ii was a bundle of clothes, and beside the bundle ■was a pair of boots and socks, which presumably belonged to the prisoner. Subsequent enquiries disclosed the fact that three houses had been entered, and in each case there were signs that tie intruder had effected an entry by ■way of a window.

The man arrested, who is about 24 years of age, gave Ms name as David Todd, and under this name was charged, at the Police Court this morning ■with having broken and entered the dwelling house of Blanche Scandle 'by night, with, intent to commit a crime, anil further with having used obscene language, SubInspector Hendrey said that when arrested stolen property was found in his dossession, and that other charges would" be preferred against him. The accused wa3 remanded for eight days.
