THE FREEMAN'S BAY WALL
INQUIRY AKD ANSWER. A letter from the Marine Department, which was before the Auckland Harbour Board this afternoon, stated that the Marine Engineer reported that when he was in Auckland recently he thoroughly examined the wall at Freeman's Bay, which partly fell over, and that he was satisfied that the work was not carried out in accordance with the authorised plans, a totally different design having been substituted, which provided for a ■wharf along the face of the wall, and which was constructed. Such departure from the approved plans was, of course, in contravention of the provisions of section 150 of "The Harbours Act, 1008. , ' The Marine Engineer also advised that in connection with matter he had ■been daily expecting that plans of the amended structure would be forwarded to him for approval and authorisation, but that they had not yet come to hand. The Department would therefore be glad if the Board would see that sucn plans were sent at an early date.
In an attached report the Board's engineer (Mr W. H. Hamer) stated that soundings and borings were being taken, and thst when the last of the debris of the damaged wall had been removed, these could be completed and an amended soetion would be prepared.
The matter was referred to the Works Committee. (
