Mr anff Mrs J. D. Coutts, of Auckland, will be passengers for Suva by the Tofua to-morrow. Mr and Mrs Alfred Kidd, of Auckland, leave by the Tofua to-morrow on thi round trip to the Islands and Sydney Mr and Mrs F. J. Marquand, and their daughter are leaving by the Maheno this evening, en route to South Africa. Mr J. 0. Hanna, who has been on an. extended visit to New Zealand, leaves by the Maheno to-night, en route for London. Mr and Mrs R. H. of Levuka, are returning home by the Island boat to-morrow, from a visit to New Zealand. Baron yon Merling, who has been staying at the Grand Hotel during the past few days, leaves by the Tofua tomorrow for Apia. Mr and Mrs Fookes, Melbourne visitors, who have been touring the Dominion, leave by the Tofua to-morrow for home, via the Islands and Sydney. Mr J. F. Arnold, M.P., Dunedin, who it visiting Auckland in connection with the annual conference of the Trades and Labour Conference, is the guest of Dr. Hardie Neil. Mr. H. W. Campbell, engineer of the Waimarino County Council, has been appointed engineer of the Kiwi tea Council out of 24 applications, says a, Feilding Press Association telegram. Drs. Leber and Prowazek, will leave Auckland by the Tofua to-morrow, on their way from Germany to Apia. Mr Ivan Nelson, Sydney, is also a passenger to Samoa by the same steamer. Dr. Wohlmann, Government BaLneologist at Rotorua, and Airs Wohlmann are leaving by the Tofua to-morrow on a round trip to the Islands and Sydney, for the benefit of Mrs Wohlmann's health. Mr H. Beauehamp, chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand, and Mrs Beauehamp are at present staying at the Grand Hotel, and will leave on a two months' visit to the Islands by: the Tofua to-morrow. Among the passengers for Sydney by the Maheno this evening are Mr and Mrs' J. J. Phillips, of Wellington, Mr and Mrs C. Gray, of Gisborne, Mr and Mrs Runting, and Mr and Mrs Powliag, of Sydney, and- Mr A. Totman, of Palmerston North. New Zealanders who are leaving by the Tofua on the round trip to-morrow, include Colonel and Mrs Hawkins, of Christchurch, Mr and Mrs Tilly, Mr and Mrs Gower, and Air and Mrs Griffiths, all of Wellington, Mr and Mrs Drummond and Mr M D. Spraggs, of Auckland. Mr W. J. W. Philson, New Zealand manager for the Colonial Sugar Refining i Company, will leave on a twelve months' : tour of the world next February, accompanied by Mrs Philson and their two daughters. Mr Philson, while absent, will visit the Straits Settlements, to make some investigation into the rubber industry. Mr S. K. Phillips, mus, bac., who leaves for Sydney by the Maheno this evening, en route for England, to pursue his studies, has been the recipient of some handsome tokens of esteem. Last Monday evening his pupils unexpectedly ! assembled at his home to bid him farewell, and Air F. R. Wilson, on their behalf, presented him with a dressing-case and framed address. On "Wednesday, evening, at a farewell social in the Parisn Hall, Mr D. Bricknell, on behalf ot the senior All Saints' choir, and Masters Brown and Histed, for the juniors, presented him with a travelling trunk and bag respectively. Mr Phillips feelingly, responded on each occasion. Mr H. G. Dutton, FJ1.C.0., AJA.A.M., a talented musician, has arrived at Auckland to practise his profession in this city. Mr Dutton, who has recently finished a brilliant course- at the Royal Academy of Music, where he gained the Stainer Exhibition for organ playing, and has since been sub and acting-professor for harmony, counterpoint and composition, won golden opinions for his orchestral compositions, and a suite from his pen is now "being performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. A fine seena for soprano voice and orchestra is i\lso receiving high commendation in London. Mr Dutton, who is a very fine organist, has accepted a position in one of the leading churches here. Air D. Petrie, M.A., who is retiring irom the post of Chief Inspector of Schools in the Auckland Education district after 16 years' service, was the guest of honour at a social evening given by the principal and Mrs Milnes at the Training College on Saturday night. Among the guests were the Mayor, Messrs. Pari, Garland and Wallace (of the Board of Education), T. W. Leys (of the University College Council), Professors A. P. W. Thomas, Segar, Egerton and Dettmann, and Messrs. Grossmann, Hunt and Wilson (of the University College staff), Mr J. W. Tihbs (headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School), Inspectors Garrard, Cox, and Plummer, Messrs. George George (director of technical education), Lewins (as-sistant-director), H. G. Cousins, MA, (headmaster of the Normal School), the staff of the Normal School,. and about 100 students and friends. Speeches eulogising the work of Mr Petrie were given by Mr Milnes, Mr C. J. Parr (chairman of the Education Board), and the Mayor, •while on hehalf of the College Mrs Milnes presented Mrs Petrie with a beautiful bouquet of flowers of the College colours. The proceedings included an excellent musical programme, kindly arranged by Mr Colin Mnston, LJLA.M, including items by the quartet party, Messrs. Ripley, Johnstone, Cutler, and Atkinson, songs hy Messrs A. H. Ripley, J. W. Atkinson, J. H. Abel, N. M. Johnstone, and C. Cutler, violin solos hy Miss Ina Bosworth and Mr A Gordon, and a violin duet by Miss I. Bosworth and Mr C. Muston. Following supper in one of the lecture rooms, festively decorated for the occasion, dancing was indulged in hy the students and friends till a late hour.
