RAILWAY SMASH.
COLLISION IN MELBOURNE. EIGHT KILLED. MANY OTHERS INJURED. (By Cable-Press Association-Copyright) (Received 1.54 p.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. A disastrous railway smash, involving serious loss of life, occurred to-day at the station, at Richmond, a suburb of Melbourne. Meagre reports of the fatality have been received so far, but the particulars to hand indicate that the smash is one of the biggest which has ever occurred on the Victorian railways. It is reported that eight were killed outright in the smash, while numbers were injured, some so seriously that a further addition to the death roll is feared.
Private cablegrams were received in Auckland from Melbourne to-day by the insurance companies interested as follows: "Serious fatal collision between trains near Melbourne."
