DAVIS CUP.

PRELIMINARY IN AUSTRALIA. LONDON, July 16. The Lawn Tennis Association has practically decided to send a team to Australia to contest the preliminary round for the Davis Cup, subject to the promise of a guarantee. Mr. Hicks, the secretary of the Australasian L.T.A., recently received from England a cable inquiring what guarantees, financial, that Association would give in the event of an English team coming out-'to play the preliminary round in Australia. The Australasian Association cabled as follows: —"Offer losers one-third profits matches other States, in addition their share preliminary guarantee, not less than £600. At least three approved plaj-ers. Offering America same terms." Xo answer has yet been received. The cable was evidently inspired by a letter from the pres-j dent of the United states National L.T.A. to the secretary o*f the English Association, which appeared in the "Lawn Tennis," the official paper of the game in England, on June 9. The letter was as follows:—"I am extremely sorry, but the double trip requires more time than some of our players can give. Moreover, we feel that we ought to be certain that we can send a fitting team to Australia should'we be fortunate as to win from Great Britain. I fear, therefore, that we must meet you in Australia, if at all."
