The s-s. Marere arrived from London and Australia late last night. The vessel left Loudon on May 23, and 43 days later arrived at Melbourne, after a stormy weather trip, in which very little damage was sustained, the 'Marere weathering it better than smaller vessels, which have been reported as having had trying experiences in the Southern Ocean. From Melbourne the Marere proceeded to Sydney, left the latter port on Wednesday last, and arrived as above. After discharging at Auckland, the steamer proceeds south to complete. NEW CANADIAN-AUSTRALASIAN CARGO SERVICE. ARRIVAL OP THE RAKAIA. MELBOURNE, July 12. The steamer Hakaia, the iirst vessel in the new monthly cargo service between Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, arrived to-day. This service has beeu suirted by the NewZealand Shipping Co., which receives a substantial subsidy from the Canadian Government. Sailing from Montreal the steamers will call at Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunediu, and return to Canada via London. Later on it is hoped to make the return trip by Australia, aud take Australasian products back to Canada. The cmpany has placed ihe Rakaia, Aotea. and Tokomaru. three modern <-argo steamers of about 6000 tor.s register each, in the service. The Rakaia left Montreal on Saturday, May 21. and steamed direct to Melbourne. She brings about 3000 tons of general cargo. The Rakaia will resume her passage to Sydney and New Zealand on Friday afternoon. PASSENGERS FOR SYDNEY. The s.s. Maheno arrived from Sydney at 12.30 p.m. yesterday. Siie left Sydney at 5.15 p.m. on Wednesday last, and experienced moderate to fresh i>. and S.W. -winds throughout.
