A MODERN SOCIAL ANOMALY
(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln your issue of the 14th inst. ithere appeared, amongst others, two ■cablegrams. One ran thus: "A greengrocer at Helmstadt shot his wife and two children, and severely -wounded three •others. He then committed suicide. Poverty is said to have caused him to go suddenly insane -and commit the murders." And ithen, almost directly under: "The Civil Service Estimates give the cost of King Edward's funeral at £40,500." With such pregnant examples of the fruits of modern civilisation and advanced political economy, may we not ex•claim, "Gloria in escelsis!"—l am, etc., LESTER F. GUBB.
