RUSSIAN A ND HIS FIANCEE.

MAGISTRATE ON "THE ARDENT. MUSCOVITE TEMPERAMENT."

Mr. WladimLr de Werbiotsky, a Russian journalist and novelist, of 9, Coburg-place, Ilyde Park, was summoned before Mr. P.'owden at Marylebone Police Court for assaulting Mr. J. J. Mclntyre, solicitor. Mr. Melntyre complained of a technical assault. He said he called at 9, Coburgplace on May 23 to SEIZE A TYPEWRITING- MACHINE which had been obtained by Mrs. Harvey Moore under a hire-purchase agreement. He was speaking with the landlord when the defendant rushed Into the room and demanded of the landlord why he had allowed the "scoundrels" to take the typewriter. He then shook hands with the witness and his clerk, and followed that up by abusing the witness, threatening to throw him out ' of the window, and finally striking him in the chest. Mr. Plowden was at a loss to understand why the defendant interfered at all, seeing that he had nothing to do with the machine. Mr. Werblotsky explained that Mrs. Harvey Moore was his fiancee. "Ah!" exclaimed Mr. Plowden, "that throws AN ENORMOUS FLOOD OF LIGHT UPON THIS INCIDENT. Now the whole thing becomes perfectly natural. Therefore anybody who touches her "■Would be killed,", excitedly interrupted, the defendant." "■What! ,, said Mr. Plowden. "Would be killed by mc," exclaimed the defendant emphatically. Mr. Plowden: "Anyone who touches her typewriter?" "No, no," replied the defendant. "I meant her. I would not allow anyone in the world to break into her rooms." He denied that he assaulted Mr. Mclntyre. Mr. Plowden. remarked that nothing i could have been more magrdficent or mor» I eroditable to the ardent Muscovite temperament tnan the defendant's attitude with r«gard to his fiancee. It was human, noble, ! and grand. He found him guilty, however, lof a technical assault, possibly committed' j unintentionally. But the whole matter, added Mr. Plowden, was so trifling that he was surprised that Mr. Mclntyre had thought it worth white to bring such a two-penny-ha'penny squabble into court at all. He fined the defendant 1/ and 2/ costs.
