CITY COUNCIL.

. The Auckland City -Council met last evening-. There.were present: The Mayor. (Mr L. J. Bagnall). Crs R. Tndehope, M. <asey. J. Jr. ilennie. G. Knight, E. T. Michaels, Thompson, H. M. -Smeeton, C. 3. Parr. H. Shaw. Patterson. P J. Xerheny, G. Tntt, P.-M. Mackay, and G. Read. TRAMWAY MATTERS. •T" 3 ?* Kew Zealand Labour party, AnekS.ind branch, wrote stating that a deputaconsisting of "Messrs Webb. Spratt, Men;nisht.-aTKI--Coekcr(Tft.-l!nd been appointed to waif upon the Council in reference to tramway matters. It was decided that the deputation should wait on the next ; meeting of the Electric and Water Committee. QUEEN-STREET LIGHTING. >. ; The inadequate -lishtinc: of Auckland's main thoroughfare was the subject of a iletter from Messrs John Court. Ltd. The Jetter stated that bearing in mind the size and importance of Auckland, and the strides -made by modern science, something better well be expected. It was further stated that a great deal of the licht ' Available in Queen-strpet was supplied without charge by private citizens. Similar letters wore received from T. B. Winstone and others. G. Lewis and Co.. and Tonson Garlick. Ltd. Considerable discussion took place on the matter, and Cr Tudehopo pointed oat that under the deed of dedication, the Tramways Company were supposed to supply certain lighting in Queen-street, and he was sure this was not op to the proper standard. The matter was eventually referred to the Works Committee. LORNE-STREET. Mr Thos. Harkin wrote in reference to the state of Lome-street. where he hao tieen delayed greatly in erecting a warehouse, owing: to the contract let to have Jj<-.rne-street and Coburg-place cut dowD not Ibeing completed. The Auckland Working Men's Club also wrote in reference to the state of Coburg-Dla cc. The letters were referred to the Works Committee. SMOKE NUISANCE. Councillor Parr introduced a petition from fw residents of Heme Bay desiring; the Council to take the necessary steps to prohibit or mitigate the smoke nuisance from Messrs Cashmorp Bros.' timber mill. The petition stated that the nuisance had always been a bad one. but lately, through trip erection of an additional smoke stack, it was becoming unbearable. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee. ELECTRIC SUPPLY MATTERS. The Electrical Engineer (Mr A. WylUe) wrote, In reply to a question by Councillor Michaels, stating that he could not recommend a fixed rate of charge per lamp in place of charging; by meter. The report -was received. In reference to the inquiry by the Eden Terrace Road Board touching the cost of lighting the New North-road In the same manner as Karangahape-road. the electrical engineer reported that the installation conld not be undertaken for a year, and that the cost of public lighting would be £22 5/ per lamp per annum for nine lamos, or a multiple of nine. It was decided to reply in terms of the yeport. and also to apply to the Minister for Electric Lines for a license to extend -the service into and through the ■Eden Terrace district. LEYS INSTITUTE. The librarian reported that during the month of June the Auckland Institute had donated S volumes, the City Library' 59 volumes, and Mr T. W. Leys 33 volumes.— Received: the donors to be thanked. The beginning of the competitions for prizes presented by Mr Coutts was also reported. Also that the card system of admission instituted by the president seemed to be successful in keeping better order both inside and outside the building. The report was received. ENGINEER'S DEPARTMENT. The Engineer (Mr W. E. Bush) reported on the expenditure in connection witb the various departments under his control for the three months ending June 30. These showed a net expenditure on streets of £5751 9/9: expenditure on Albert Park and improvements. £552 7/7: street lighting. £502 14/7: domain gardens aud grounds, including improvements, £547 11/4: sanitation.- £-1105 4': drainage loan, £1999 10/S: Grafton Bridge loan. £1595: Town Hall loan. £8275: streets improvement loan, £302S 18/1; Freeman's Bay sewer, £1350 S.TO. OLD ABATTOIR SITE. Touching the statement by the Town Clerk of Grey Lynn last month that the plan of the proposed roading of the old abattoir site was still under consideration it was decided to press the Grey Lynn Council for a definite reply.
