THE HARBOURS BILL.
MEETING AT BIRKENHEAD. ' A special meeting of the Birkenhead .Borough Council was held last night for ' the purpose of considering the Harbours Act' Amendment Bill now before Parliament. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. Keyes), Crs. Campbell, Skeates, T. Hadfield, T. Church, Pitt, Gilbert, Kay, and Wallace. The Mayor reported the result of the recent conference of local bodies on the ■northern side of the harbour. After discussion, it was unanimously decided to endorse the resolutions passed at the conference, protesting against the Government, under clause 54 of the biU, depriving the Auckland Harbour Board of the power it now possesses with reference to the control oi the passenger ferry service. It was decided to protest against the provision made for representation on the Harbour Board in the bill, and the Council suggested that Devenport borough should be aUotted one -member, Birkenhead and Northcote borough one member jointly, and the Waitemata County one. It was further resolved to wire copies of these resolutions to the Premier (Sir J. G. Ward), the Minister for Marine (Hon. J. A. Millar), and the member for the district (Mr. L. R. Phillipp3), and the various Auckland members of Parliament.
