INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE.

A sitting of the Auckland Concilia- • tion Council was opened, this-morningto j deal with the industrial dispute between the Auckland Saddlers, Harness Makers, I Collar "Makers and Bridle Cutters' Union lof Workers and the employers,, of whom one hundred and fifty-two were cited. Mr. T. Harle Gile3 . (Conciliation Commissioner) presided. Messrs., J. W. Wiseman, Rl Hill and W. Hawkins appeared as assessors for the employers, and Messrs. K. McNab; A.. Tilly and J. Clark for the workers, while Messrs. F. C. Knight and J. Mcintosh,,'respectively, represented, the workers' and the employers' unions. • .'•; Mr. E. Le Roy applied for exemption from the clauses Of any .award made, with the. exception- of •■■ that referring to wages, on the ground that he employed canvas makers* and not saddlers. The Council agreed. An application for exemption was also made-by Mr. E. A. Craig, on behalf of Messrs. J. J. Craig and Co., it being pointed out that the firm employed men to required only by the firm, and not for competitive purposes. The workers' representative objected to the granting of the application, and the matter was held over for further consideration; The Council then merged - into conference for the purpose of considering the points in dispute, ilr. J; Robertson was added to the employers' delegates, and Mr. T. Parkee to the workers'. The principal point of difference in the demands filed by the workers and the award that has expired is in regard to wages. Under the old award journeymen received from £2. S/- to £2. 15/----per' week, and the men are now asking for not less than 1/3. per hour for a week's work of 48, hours. A corresponding increase is also asked for apprentices, starting at 7/0 per week, and going up to 30/- a week in the fifth year. - -. ~ .- '■*■■—^~—^———
