Mr Nuttall said that about eieveh o'clock he was walking with a lady In Wbodberry Down, a secluded thoroughfare near Pinsbury Park. He noticed the prisoner looking at them,- &nd felt snspicious of lilm. After walking for jtbout f6fty yards "the laUy refused to go further.. Then the witness, heard a movement in the shrubs on private ground on the other side of a wooden fence. He struck at the bush with his stick, and the -prisoner , botrnfled over the fence like a cat, and struck him on the face and body with bis fists. !to d'Eyncoiirt:' You tell a very etrange tale. Why did he excite your suspicion? Mr Nuttali: I thtinght ih6 irras up to no good. .. , wiat did yoii think be was going to do? —I don't know. Continuing, the witness said that ihe walked -' frfciy from the man. Soon ihe lieard a police whistle, and, looking round, saw a. man running and stopped him. To his surprise it was ttie man. who tad assaulted him. A constable came up and tUe prisoner accused the witness of having struck him ■vriiii his stick. Mr d'Eyncouft: Is the lady here? Mr Nuttall: No. - Why?—l wisli to' keep &c kdy out of it Constable 356N": said ihe saw the prisoner in a front garden in Woodberry Down. When he saw tie witness ihe ran away. The witness followed, blowing tls "whistle. The inafi waS stopped by" Hie prosecutor, wiiO then charged hiffl with assault. Tie prisoner now said Jne only gave the •prosecutor one pfcah.
