WON BY SYDNEY. SYDNEY, June IS. As a prelude to 'the match between the Maoris and New South Wales, the American L T niversity team played their first match in Australia, their opponents being Sydney University. The visitors displayed a fine knowledge of the game, their kicking in the first spell giving them a lead of six" to nil. In the second half the Sydney lads' form stood by them, and they scored rapidly. The Americans failed to score, the game resulted: Sydney University 17, American University 6. NORTHERN UNION GAME. WON BY BRITISHERS. SYDNEY, June IS. About 40,000 witnessed the League match between the English and Australian teams. The game vras won by Sk* English -teanv-lrg 2J jjoints tftiS,
after a vigorous and stirring display, the j Englishmen winning chiefly through the superiority of the forwards. Their weigtet told in- the scrums, and their footwork in the open was a long way better than the Australians. The Britishers had the wind against, them in the opening spell, but kept close on the Australians, and were only one point behind when the whistle sounded: Australia 12, England 11.
In the next half the visitors asserted their superiority. The backs on both side 3 performed well, but the Englishmen were more niaehinelike. Batten and Ley than (wings.) played a fine game. Messenger, for Australia, was in fine form, making several brilliant runs. Prior to the commencement of the game a goal-kicking contest was held between Lomas and Messenger, the Englishman winning by one goal.
