(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DREDGE .TCWPTiOYiRB , Trrr.T.Tm. DUNEDIN, Sunday. • A seaman named Mndlay Malcolm, who •was employed on the Harbour Board's dredge, was killed last night. He became entangled in the spindle of the windlass, and was carried round in the machinery. The engine -was stopped, and the machinery reversed to extricate the body. One aim ■was nearly torn from the body, and one leg broken, and the man was dead when extricated. It ia surmised that some string round Mal'•colm's leg was caught in the shaft. Deceased was a married man, with five children. He was 35 years of age, and resided at Port Chalmers. NATIONAL DAIRY SHOiW. PALMEESTON NORTH, this day. Crowds of visitors are arriving for £he National Dairy Show, which opens tomorrow. If the present fine weather continues, the present fixture promises to totally eclipse the most successful predecessors. The show will be especially strong in fruit, dairying, machinery, milking machines at work, the Association having made special features this year of these classes. PAHIATUA, this day. A 'man named Arthur Nichol, a sawmill hand, who met with a serious acci-" dent at Nireaha three days ago, was brought to Pahiatua, where he lies in a precarious condition. He was caught in some belting and carried round a number of times before the engine was stopped. RUNNING CHALLENGE. GORE, this day. In a chat with an "Ensign" representative this morning, Mr W. F. Trembath, champion runner, said he was prepared to meet Sanson over three distances: 300, 500, and 600 yards, for £50 a-side. He deposited £10 with. Ifir J. Virgo, Secretary of the Gore Athletic Society, as a proof of bona fides in the matter. Trembath is willing to ran at Hastings if £10 is allowed for expenses, but he stipulates that the matches should take place in October, or early in November. The Gore runner also intimates that he was prepared to meet anyone in New Zealand over a quarter or half-mile for £50 a-side or more. FIRE IN GHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHTJRCH, Saturday. A fire which occurred this morning at the residence of Mr. George Gerard Fendalton, a wooden house of twenty rooms, was confined to the upper floor, but other rooms and furniture were considerably damaged by water and removal. The house was insured for £2500 and the furniture for £500 in the Royal. OTAGA'S UNEMPLOYED. DUNEDIN, this day. At a meeting of unemployed, it was mentioned that of those present, 200 were out of work, all being local men. It was also stated that the unemployed difficulty was not going to be anything like as bad as it was last winter.
